Bearcats fall in season opener
The Grandfield Bearcats entered the 2000
season opener ranked No. 5 in the Daily Oklahoman's Class C High School Football
Rankings, and the young Bearcats were thrown into the fire when the hosted Class
B's No. 10 ranked Snyder Cyclones on Friday.
Standout junior tailback Frank Valderas
led an experienced Snyder team as they defeated the Bearcats, 42-6. Valderas ran for three touchdowns and threw for another one
as the Cyclones were in control from the get-go.
Snyder quarterback Cliff Keeble hooked up with Michael Parker
for a 35-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring for the Cyclones with 7:30 left
in the first quarter. Valderas took
over from there hitting Geoff Parker for a 50-yard touchdown pass before reeling
off touchdown runs of 18-, 48-, and 40-yards to led the Cyclones to a 34-0
halftime advantage. Zac Crume
finished off the Snyder scoring in the third with a 1-yard run.
The Bearcat offense finally found the endzone in the fourth
when sophomore running back Albert Brown scooted around the left end for an
18-yard touchdown run. Sophomore
fullback Andrew Franco did provide the Bearcats with a bright spot as he rushed
for 108 yards on 20 carries.
"Basically, it kind of went the way I figured it might
go being early and with being so young."
Bearcat coach Larry Turner said, "They brought up some different
sets and formations that our kids just didn't adjust to, but I think they will
as the season goes along. They've
been a little uncertain as far as positions and I think it showed up in the
game. Defensively we've got some
work to do, we've got some people to move around, but I think we can get it back
together. I think that we'll get
better as the season goes on."
The Bearcats look to even their record on Friday as they
travel to Lone Wolf to play the Coyotes. Kickoff
is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
