Tigers buck Bronchos
The Tipton Tigers upped their record to
2-0 on the season with a 46-14 Homecoming win over Central Marlow on Friday.
Tailback Robert Jasper led the Tigers’
attack which rolled to 331 total yards of offense.
The junior speedster carried the ball just six times in the contest but
reached the endzone three times on his way to 150 yards rushing on the night.
The game was never in doubt as Tipton jumped to an early 22-0
first quarter lead. It took the
Tigers just 1:31 to find the endzone as Jasper took the ball on the third play
from scrimmage and raced 51 yards for the touchdown. Tipton added to its lead just over 2:00 later when Anthony
Hill took a pitch from quarterback Justin White and bolted 12 yards to paydirt.
White hit Wesley Ward for the two-point conversion giving the Tigers a
14-0 advantage. The Tigers capped
off their first quarter dominance as White hit freshman speedster Shawn Hill on
a 47-yard scoring strike with 5:30 remaining in the quarter.
Another two-pointer followed as White connected with Eric Hill.
Tipton didn’t slow down in the second as A. Hill and Jasper
increased the Tigers’ lead with touchdowns on a 4-yard run and a 40-yard punt
return, respectively. E. Hill and
Jacob Cope tacked on the two-point conversions after each touchdown pushing the
Tipton lead to 38-0.
Central finally got on the scoreboard late in the second when
Keenan Graham hit John Neese for a 12-yard touchdown pass with 2:10 remaining in
the half. Chris Garrett added the
two-point conversion cutting the Tigers’ lead to 38-8 at the half.
Jessica Estelle was crowned Homecoming Queen before each team
added one score in the second half with Tipton scoring on a 60-yard sprint by
Jasper and Central scoring on a 28-yard run by Graham.
In the end, the Tigers were too much for Central High to
handle, but the two teams will face off again in district play the last week of
the season.
“They played without their starting quarterback,” Tipton
coach Jim Kerbo said, “so I imagine they’ll be better the second time we
play them.”
“I thought we were a lot smoother last (Friday) night
offensively and defensively. I
thought we played a lot better responsibility on defense, we didn’t have as
many busts. Offensively, we were a
lot smoother. Our first unit was
nearly flawless the first three, four, or five series of the game. I thought all of our backs looked real good last night, and
our offensive line just blew people out all night long, so all the guys that
played up front did a tremendous job. We
put a lot of points on the board early and gave our young kids a chance to
play.”
The Tigers return to action on Saturday when they host the
Hollis JV. Tipton begins district
play next week against Bray-Doyle.
