Grandfield's Marshall leads lynching of Lone Wolf
There's a new lawman in Bearcat Country,
and his name is Hargis, Marshall Hargis. The
junior quarterback led the Bearcats to their first win of the season on Friday
as Grandfield spurred Lone Wolf, 54-8, in district play.
Hargis rushed for four touchdowns and
threw for another as the Bearcat posse rolled to 613 yards of offense, including
534 yards rushing, in the 45-point mercy rule shortened win over the helpless
Coyotes.
"The Marshall" was far from being a one man show,
though, as a trio of Bearcat backs topped 100 yards rushing.
Fullback Andrew Franco led the way with 168 yards and tailback Robert
James followed with 134 yards while Hargis added 110 yards and Rolando Rodriguez
came up just short of the century mark with 93 yards.
"I was pleased with the way the backfield performed last
(Friday) night." Grandfield coach Larry Turner said, "I was real
pleased with the way Marshall read the option.
We had been working on that this (past) week, and we knew we were capable
of running it. Our fullback (Andrew
Franco) has been a good steady back for us, and when we get our tailback (Robert
James) in the flow with us on that (the option), then we've got several good
options."
Grandfield took control of the game early as Hargis raced 55
yards for the Bearcats' first score with 4:24 remaining in the first.
Hargis would add a one-yard TD run and a two-point conversion with 2:27
remaining to give the Bearcats a 14-0 lead after one period.
The Bearcats blew the game wide open in the second quarter
scoring four touchdowns on their way to a 42-0 halftime lead.
Hargis found Rodriguez for a 45-yard scoring strike with 10:20 remaining
in the half. Franco added the
two-point conversion and the Bearcats were up 22-0.
Less than two minutes later, Hargis scored his third touchdown of the
night on a 25-yard sprint, and Franco again added two, 30-0 Bearcats.
Grandfield would add two more touchdowns with less than 3:00 remaining as
James and Albert Brown scored on runs of 25- and 20-yards, respectively.
Lone Wolf finally found the endzone 2:12 into the third when
Calen Meinert ended hopes of a Bearcat shutout as he dashed 60 yards for the
Coyotes only score.
Hargis found the endzone for his fourth and final score on a
14-yard burst with 6:11 remaining in the third, and Franco ended the game with a
55-yard romp putting eight-man's 45-point mercy rule into effect.
"I thought the kids started playing up to their ability
a little bit," coach Turner added, "and in every game from here on
out, it's important to try to build on that.
The kids stepped up and they played the way they ought to."
The Bearcats, who are now 1-1 overall and 1-0 in district,
will continue district play on Friday as they host rival Temple.
The Tigers are also 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in district play after a
37-7 win over Corn Bible last Friday.
"These are all district games, so everything's important
from here on out." Coach
Turner noted, "It's a big rivalry, and I don't know how much that'll play
in the deal. Temple and Grandfield
have had some good battles over the years, and I know they're going to come
ready to play. We're going to have
to be ready, and we're going to have to make some improvements even off of this
(last) week (against Lone Wolf)."
The Bearcats are looking to move into the driver's seat in
District C-2. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
