Temple tops Bearcats

Turnovers hurt.  A young Grandfield team found that out the hard way on Friday as they lost to Temple 18-10 in District C-2 play.

Grandfield out-played the Tigers but lost three fumbles inside Temple’s 13-yard line ending scoring drives.
It was a defensive struggle all night and fittingly the Bearcats’ defense scored the first points of the game when Andrew Franco sacked Temple quarterback Brent McIntyre in the endzone for a safety.
Temple was held without a first down in the first quarter, but took the lead on a 38-yard screen pass from McIntyre to Jeremy Kinder late in the second quarter, 6-2. That’s how the half would end.
Temple took a 12-2 lead on a 20-yard Rafaiel Simmons run in the third.  The Tigers extended their lead to 18-2 on a 15-yard McIntyre run following a Phillip Martinez interception of a Marshall Hargis pass.
Grandfield fought back to make it interesting in the fourth as Franco capped a long Bearcat drive with a six-yard touchdown run.  Hargis added the two-point conversion and the Tigers’ lead was cut to eight with 11:18 remaining in the game.  The Bearcat defense followed by holding the Tigers to three-and-out, and the offense began to drive once again.  Franco led the way as he pounded the Tiger defense for runs of 16- and 14-yards helping the Bearcats drive to the Tiger 13-yard line with just under a minute remaining.  Grandfield’s hopes ended seconds later as Temple recovered a Bearcat fumble with :43 remaining.  It was the sixth Bearcat turnover of the game.
Grandfield continues district play next Friday as they visit the Corn Bible Crusaders.
