Turnovers hurt Bearcats in loss to Corn Bible

For the second week in a row a young Grandfield Bearcat team was hurt by turnovers as they fell to Corn Bible, 29-0, in District C-2 play last Friday night.

Neither offense was able to move the ball consistently as the two teams combined for just 269 yards, 134 yards by Grandfield and 135 yards by Corn Bible, but five Bearcat turnovers gave the host Crusaders the field position they needed to take the win.
The defensive struggle remained scoreless for most of the first half before Corn Bible scored two touchdowns late in the second quarter.  Ronnie Smith opened the scoring with a five-yard plunge and Jeff Peters added the second score on an eight-yard run with 1:21 left in the half.  Ziya Gunay booted both PATs giving the Crusaders a 14-0 halftime lead.
That would be all the Crusaders would need as the Bearcats couldn’t get their offense untracked in the second half.
There weren’t many offensive fireworks in this one but Bearcat quarterback Marshall Hargis gained 45 yards on eight carries and fullback Andrew Franco added 43 yards on 11 carries.  Defensively the Bearcats were led by Paul Castillo with 15 tackles while Franco chipped in 12 tackles, including a sack.
The loss drops the Bearcats to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in district play.  Grandfield is idle this week, but returns to action again next Friday, October 6, as they host winless Sasakwa in district action.
